Although the crane population is still low, these birds have made a comeback thanks to sanctuaries such as the reserve. Its exhibits present an intriguingly detailed picture of these iconic Japanese avians that symbolise longevity and loyalty as they mate with one partner for life. The Kushiro City Museum building was designed to emulate the shape of a red crown crane spreading its wings. Inside, you will find an array of natural history treasures, including a mounted crane, the skeleton of a blue whale and artefacts relating to the indigenous Ainu culture.
